  The Enemy Within

  Chapter 1 :

  -Agent Angela Smith-

Today wasn’t just any other day for agent Angela smith. After about three years of working straight and never getting to miss a single day, she was finally getting her much needed break and needless to say, she just couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear.

All of her colleagues were feeling a little bit envious of her since they were packed with all of the toughest cases and the chief of police wanted nothing but results since it was his final year as the head, he wanted to make sure that he graduated to the next phase of life with flying colors.

And for that to be a possibility, then it would mean that some people had to be overworked. And since he was only left with a couple of minutes left on his roster, agent smith had managed to secure a brief vacation from the backbreaking police work. With all of the kids back from school and all, it was a little bit difficult for the police to catch a break since they were the most notorious age group and in the end, they were in a position to get into a hell lot of trouble.

And for that matter, she did choose a very good time to take a break from all of that pressure and quite frankly, she just couldn’t want to leave.

“I don’t know how you are going to just leave when things seem to be falling apart around here. Cant you just stay until the big man retires and things could finally go back to normal?”

“nah, I think I will have to take a pass on this one. As far as I am concerned, everything that I will be required to do at this moment would always get to the point where it is for my benefit as far as my peace of mind is concerned. And at this moment, I don’t think that is what I can end up saying at any given moment.”

the two friends and long time colleagues laughed while agent smith was slowly packing up the stuff on her desk. They had just finished solving a very big murder case and now that it was over and done with, the only other thing that would have made some sense would have been for the brilliant and very young star agent to leave as fast as possible.

the chief, knowing that agent smith also doubled up as one of the finest agents in the city, always made sure that he was always taking advantage of that to keep her overworked. And when a very controversial case was solved, he always got the opportunity to steal the show in the media and get to shake hands with some of the best as far as the political arena was concerned.

But now, agent smith had finally found that one opening that she had been hoping for and that said, there was no way that she was going to just sit there and do nothing. So as soon the case was closed, agent smith didn’t want to wait any longer.

“if the chief asks for me, tell him I left an hour ago.”

That was what she told the chief of police secretary, who also wasn’t shy of airing her envy that agent smith was going all the way to the Bahamas to enjoy her vacation during one of the busiest days in the police annual calendar.

But deep down, they all knew that the amazingly beautiful police officer had earned it. And so once they had finished hating her jokingly, they hugged her and wished her all the best. Even some of her closest friends gave her a list of things that they wanted for her to bring back from the Bahamas when she came back.

In her head, agent smith just couldn’t help but picture of all the things that she had wanted to do once she had the chance to go to the Bahamas. Thanks to her undying commitment to the gym, it was such a difficult thing for her not to carry all of her bikinis. And being the single girl that she was, it seemed as though she was most definitely going to “kill” all of those hot guys up there.

And then since nobody really knew her up there, Angela wanted to at least get to play a little and break a couple of rules here and there and in the end, get the chance to enjoy herself to the fullest, something that she hadn’t been in a position to do for a very long time.

Another big hobby that Angela had was cooking. And that said, she literally couldn’t wait to get abroad and get to take all of their exotic cuisines and in the end, get the opportunity to enjoy herself to the fullest which was an added advantage altogether. As a matter of fact, she couldn’t wait to get home and get to google all of their cuisines and get to list out all of the dishes that she most definitely wanted to enjoy having.

That said, she decided to play her favorite music as she drove. But no sooner had she turn the dial than her phone rung and she checked the screen and almost collapsed and drove over a cliff when she saw that it was the chief of police. He was the bearer of bad news and no one ever wanted to be the ones who are receiving his call since it would only mean more work.

And for a couple of seconds, all that Angela wanted to do was ignore that call once and for and get to call him when she touched down in the Bahamas. But she was left with no other choice since her duty to the public had to come first. And so after she had calmed herself down, the only other thing that she would have done would have been to wait for a couple of seconds, then when she was calm, she picked up the phone and responded.

  “Hello?”

  Chapter 2 :

  -The dream team-

As soon as agent smith put the phone down she almost broke down to tears. How on earth could her boss do this to her twice in a row? Yes, he might really want nothing but the best as far as policing was concerned because it was his last round as a chief and for that matter, the chief would want her around since she was the best.

But why the chief always liked doing this to her was clearly beyond her and for a moment, she froze in her car, not knowing what to do next. All of this was just too much for her to bear and for a moment, the only thing that she could have done would have been to try as much as possible to ensure that she was in a position to forego the call and proceed with her vacation.

But then again, that wasn’t how she had been trained. If anything, agent smith was supposed to run as fast as she possibly could towards the work since her training was to ensure that she was running towards danger at all times. But from the look of things, the only thing that would have made some sense would have been to make sure that she took a couple of minutes just to calm down and not get to do any damn thing that would be considered as rushed.

She took a couple of deep breaths over and over again and once she felt as though she was cool enough, she checked the rare view of the car and seeing no car coming over, she started the engine and took a round turn and headed back to the office with a long face.

Yes, agent smith knew that work had to be done but either way, she still needed to rest if at all she was to bring her best game at the end of the day and that was final. Either way, the only other thing that would have made some sense would have been to find something to punch as soon as she got the chance to. But at the moment, she started to ponder about th
e crime that she was supposed to be solving.

If at all she was going to solve this one case as fast as possible, then at the end of the day everything will most definitely work as perfectly as possible. the boss had also promised that he was going to foot all of the bills that she was going to have in the Bahamas in a bid to calm her down.

Even the chief knew that he had touched a couple of nerves when he called her out and asked her to make such kind of sacrifices for the moment. it was just too darn much for him and for a moment, the only other thing that would have made sense was for the good agent to even forget that she was on her way to enjoy a vacation.

  ***

Of course, there was no way that agent smith was going to do the job alone. If at all the commander wanted the work all sorted out as fast as possible, then the most important thing would have been for her to sermon her team of very intelligent agents who were going to help her brainstorm the case. She hated working alone, but sometimes, all that she needed to do was to kick back and make sure that she was in a position to figure things out.

But first, agent smith had to go and see the commander since he was the one who had summoned her in a bid to want to get to know just whatever the heck that was going on. She just didn’t understand why things were happening to her the way that they were and in such occasions, the best thing for her to do would have been to make a follow up and see if everything was in place.

  “Back so soon huh”

  “You don’t want to know.”

And in order to avoid having further conversations on the same, the good agent made sure that she was heading all the way into the chief’s office and bolted the door right behind her.

“I know that you are very upset, but I needed to have nothing but the best on this case. And you know that there are top notch officers in here but you are the cream.”

“I know you are just saying that to make me feel good. And trust me, it feels good until that point where I remember that I was on my way to the Bahamas. Come on sir, there are plenty of good cops who could have solved this one.”

“I also know that. But then again, I want the best on the team. It is election year and that said, things like this will always gain all the traction in the world. And that said, we will need to close this one up before the politicians get wind of this and get the chance to use it as a pretext to end up in office for another term.”

Agent smith wanted to say something, but she stopped as soon as she realized that it was absolutely pointless for her to keep on arguing. Besides, she had a job to do.

  Chapter 3:

  -When things don’t add up-

Agent smith just couldn’t understand whatever the heck that was going on. At first, all that she wanted to do was to kick back and make sure that she was in a position to understand the motive as to why the beggar decided to kill that person and still not rob them of anything. And for that to happen, agent smith needed some time to examine that evidence that had been given to her.

Apart from being a kick ass at whatever it was that she did, the other thing that made her to be on top of her game was the fact that she was always in a position to leave no stone unturned. So she took off some time to study whatever it was that she needed to study and made sure that she was getting to do it the right way.

First and foremost, she started with making sure that she was in a position to read all of the reports of the forensic scientists that got to the place. And as usual, it was all detailed and she didn’t really need to scrutinize it that much since it was written by one police officer. And after she was done, agent smith made sure that she was getting to check out the surveillance and that was where the whole problem started.

For a moment, she saw the two ladies coming from a movie and getting to pass by a bagger who asked for some change, which they stopped and gave him something and even though she couldn’t get to see what they were saying, she figured that he must have been thanking them profusely judging from their body language which did all of the trick.

And then there was another video where the same man was attacking one of the girls and getting her throat slit. The video was graphic and would have affected any normal person. But then again, she just wasn’t a normal person. If anything, she was the kind of person who would withstand the grimmest of videos. And just like that, things just didn’t make any sense at that moment.

Why would someone want to attack you after you would have helped them out? Beggars were human too and that said, agent smith expected them to behave the very same way as any other humans especially when it did come to getting things sorted out as perfectly as possible, which was an added advantage altogether. And just like that, her doubts started to build up, something that she never even tried to fight off since it did go a long way in making sure that she was getting her instinct kicked up.

Finally, the team was assembled once again and this time round, they had all of the evidence from the forensics team. The evidence included a well edited surveillance video and on top of that, the murder weapon, the blood samples from the body and on top of that, some boot prints which were believed to have belonged to the killer since they were deep and he was in a running position when he left the prints.

And just like that, the only other thing that would have made some sense at any given moment would have been for them to ignore all of the pieces of evidence first and try to keep their focus on the video since it had all of the most important evidence that would have made their work much easier.

“Look at that homeless guy go, I think I might know him though in here he looks a little bit chunky.” Said one agent as they all got prompted to look a little bit closer.

There weren’t too many beggars or homeless people in town and so it would only make some sense to get to check one out and get to know all about them without a doubt. And after a while, they all knew the guy who was in question and from there, agent smith had to take the cause of action and see to it that she was in a position to carry out an arrest and call it a day.

Every one of the police officers really wanted to close this one and give the chief that popular and very colorful sendoff that even though he didn’t say that he so much wanted it, they all could see it in his eyes. He wanted it too darn bad.

“We all know him. He always puts on the same clothes and parks at the Walmart that is opposite the mayor’s office. I think we can end up catching up with him even right now.”

And the police officers didn’t see any reason to keep on waiting. They quickly took their gear and drove to the spot where they actually guessed that they were most definitely going to get him. And after about ten minutes, the police officers, about twenty of them, had surrounded him and the culprit, who was frail and dirty, put his hands up and screamed for them to have mercy and not shoot, which was a little bit strange for a guy who was guilty.

But the video evidence was clearly pointing to the fact that he was the killer and they had to bring him in. he didn’t resist of try to run, he just lay flat on his stomach and the police officers cuffed him and escorted him towards one of the three police cars that they had brought with them and drove off.

“Well, that was very easy. As a matter of fact, I think it was much easier than I had anticipated.”

And agent smith had no other choice but to conquer with her colleague. Something just wasn’t making sense and even though the evidence was pointing towards the culprit being the killer, there was still something that just didn’t add up. Thankfully, they had him and they will soon find out.

  Chapter 4 :

  -One on one-

After carefully examining the evidence, agent smith thought that maybe it would be a good idea for her to get to see the beggar and get to hear his side of the story. As far as she was concerned, the only other thing that would have made sense was to not only get to hear whatever he said but also make sure that she was getting to check out his body language.

The body always gave out plenty of ans
wers even though the person who is being interrogated was too darn busy cooking up a shitload of lies over and over again. And thankfully, agent smith had been around that block for a while and needless to say, had managed to master the skill at the end of the day and she knew the she was most definitely going to have everything else all sorted out without a doubt.

So once she had conducted the first meeting, she needed to understand a couple of things from the culprit’s point of view. But even according to her point of view, there were plenty of things that weren’t just making a lot f sense as far as the video was concerned. And for that matter, she needed to get to understand just whatever the heck was going on. And as soon as she had done so, she was most definitely going to put an end to this case and make a point of going for that much anticipated trip that he always wanted to.

The cells where the culprit was being held were cold as hell and even though agent smith had been wearing some heavy police coat to combat the cold properly, it still seemed as though it was going to be a long shot since the cold was clearly finding a way in which it was getting to kick her ass without any shred of mercy. But either way, the only thing that would have made some sense would have been to proceed with her mission and not let the cold to distract her at any given moment.

As soon as she got there, she stopped and checked him out for a moment as though she was looking for the kind of body language that would give her a vague judgment of whether he was guilty as charged or innocent. And this went on for a couple of minutes as the two of them stayed motionless for a while.

“Are you going to just sit there and look at me or are you going to ask me if I am responsible for the killings.” The beggar asked without turning his head to look at her.

“Well, since I am the police officer and you are the culprit, I get to ask you all of the questions and not the other way round. Do you understand me?”
